Quick Guide: How To Measure Employee Satisfaction

employee-satisfaction

Business leaders often overlook employee satisfaction as a factor in their company’s success.  However, happy employees lead to better customer service and a more productive workplace. Additionally, employee satisfaction is linked to retention rates – meaning that if your employees are satisfied with their positions, they’re less likely to leave.

It is close-minded and insufficient to determine how well your business is doing based solely on profits and brand reputation. Although these pillars of quality and authority can give justice to how well a company is handled, one needs to go deeper and peek beneath the surface.

Everything visible on the outside, positive or negative, results from company culture, business process management, and a series of day-to-day operations. And of course, it goes down to the teams that do the job. Thus, employee satisfaction is an equally important metric for analyzing the success and productivity of an organization.

In this article, we will first aim to define what employee satisfaction is and describe the characteristics of a team member happy with their job. Then, we will go on to walk you through the steps to measure (and improve!) employee satisfaction in your company.

What Is Employee Satisfaction?

Employee satisfaction is a measure of how pleased employees are with their jobs. A satisfied employee is one who enjoys going to work and feels that their job is fulfilling. Additionally, satisfied employees will likely have a positive outlook on the company they work for and feel that their contributions are valued.

There are a number of factors that can contribute to employee satisfaction, including:

– The type of work

– Their working hours

– Their relationships with their co-workers and superiors

– The company’s culture

– Their salary and benefits package

If any of these factors are not up to par, it can lead to dissatisfied employees who may eventually leave the company.

What Are the Characteristics of a Satisfied Employee?

It is typically easier to point your finger at those employees who feel disgruntled with their job. Low motivation levels, lack of proactiveness, and unwillingness to learn and develop are some of the obvious signs of the bad seed you need to either train more or get rid of.

However, unfortunately, there is so much more involved in employee satisfaction than this. After all, only 40% of employees have stated they were happy with their jobs, which means it is not that simple to gauge the reasons.

Usually, a satisfied employee would be happy to take the initiative to boost your company’s growth. They are not afraid to experiment and contribute ideas, which they are happy to follow through to achieve a positive result.

Also, they enjoy their work, feel a sense of accomplishment, and are proud to represent your company. This way they are more likely to stay with the organization.

Most importantly, stellar performers have a positive attitude that is infectious, thereby impacting the whole team’s morale. They love looking for new challenges outside of their “comfort zone” and are happy to volunteer for new projects once their tasks are taken care of.

Another obvious sign of a content employee is their professionalism in internal comms with the team. You won’t find these individuals wasting time on gossip, attention seeking or backstabbing their colleagues. Instead, they will look for ways to positively influence other team members so they can all contribute to success.

Here are some of the most common characteristics of a satisfied employee:

– Engaged in their work

– Have a positive attitude

– Are proactive

Team players

– Always willing to learn and grow

– Committed to the company’s success

– Proud to be a part of the company

– Have a strong work ethic

8 Ways To Measure Employee Satisfaction

Now that we’ve described employee satisfaction as a concept and outlined the main traits of a happy team member, let’s now observe some ways to measure and boost your efforts in this important area of business.

1. Set up an Anonymous Survey

One of the most popular methods for measuring employee satisfaction is to set up an anonymous survey. This can be done easily using a tool like Google Forms or Survey Monkey.

When creating your survey, make sure to include questions that will give you insights into the different factors that affect employee satisfaction. For example, you could ask employees about their relationships with their co-workers, their workload, and their overall opinion of the company.

2. Hold One-on-one Meetings

Another great way to get insights into employee satisfaction is to hold regular one-on-one meetings with your team members. During these meetings, you can ask employees about their current projects, their goals, and how they’re feeling about their work.

One-on-one meetings are also a great opportunity to provide feedback to employees and to address any concerns they may have.

3.  Observe Employee Behavior

Employee satisfaction can also be gauged by observing employees’ behavior. For example, if you notice that an employee is regularly taking long lunches or leaving work early, this could be a sign that they’re unhappy with their job.

4. Learn to Use the Employee Satisfaction Index (ESI)

The Employee Satisfaction Index (ESI) is a tool that can be used to measure employee satisfaction. The ESI is made up of four factors: pay, benefits, job security, and working conditions.

5.  Hold Focus Groups to Boost Employee Satisfaction

Focus groups are another great way to get insights into employee satisfaction. During a focus group, a small group of employees is brought together to discuss a specific topic.

Focus groups can be used to discuss a variety of topics, such as the company’s culture, the current project an employee is working on, or anything else that might be relevant to employee satisfaction.

6.  Calculate Your Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS)

The Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) is a tool that measures employee satisfaction. To calculate your eNPS, simply ask employees to rate their likelihood to recommend your company to a friend or family member on a scale from 1 to 10.

The eNPS is then calculated by subtracting the percentage of employees who rate you a 9 or 10 from the percentage of employees who rate you a 0 to 6.

7.  Use the Job Characteristics Model

The Job Characteristics Model (JCM) is a tool that can be used to measure employee satisfaction. The JCM looks at five factors that affect job satisfaction: task identity, task significance, autonomy, feedback, and job security.

8.  Use The Workplace Happiness Index (WHI)

The Workplace Happiness Index (WHI) is a tool that can be used to measure employee satisfaction. The WHI looks at five factors that affect job satisfaction: pay, benefits, job security, working conditions, and relationships with co-workers.

To use the WHI, simply ask employees to rate each of these factors on a scale from 1 to 5. The average of all the ratings will give you the employee satisfaction index for your company.
